1)The Hong Kong government said that they will be looking at whether there would be a need to change the vaccine used to protect the chickens against avian flu after the latest outbreak at the local poultry farm. Health secretary York Chow had confirmed that some chickens from a farm in the New Territories area of Hong Kong, near the border with mainland China, had died of the H5 virus. He had also told the reporters that the virus has mutated over the past six years although it had not turned into a human-to- human or become more serious. The H5N2 vaccine currently used on chickens is manufactured in the Netherlands and was considered to be the most effective vaccine of its type during the last outbreak in Hong Kong in 2003, he said. Chow added that about 90,000 chickens would have been slaughtered by the end of this week, including 60,000 on the farm at the centre of the outbreak. Hong Kong was the scene of the world's first reported major bird flu outbreak among humans in 1997, when six people died. Scientists fear the H5N1 strain of the virus could mutate into a form which is much more easily transmissible between humans, triggering a global pandemic.
Opinions: I think that what the Hong Kong government is doing is extremely right. The slaughtering of chickens can prevent the outbreak of the virus from mutating into a form which can be much more easily transmissible between humans. If the virus mutate into a form which is much more easily transmissible between humans, then, it would be similar to the time when there is a outbreak of SARS. The SARS had killed lots of people in Singapore. However, I think that this is not a piece of good news as I think that the prices of chickens may rise. The poorer families might not be able to afford them. As a result, they may not get the nutrients from chicken which children may need to fight diseases.(336 words)

2)Pakistan was still awaiting "concrete proof" that a group based there carried out the devastating Mumbai attacks, as India said evidence was mounting and warned its anger had not cooled. As twin bomb blasts killed 27 people in Pakistan's northwest, President Asif Ali Zardari stressed the country was also a victim of terror and was carrying out its own investigation into the assault on India's financial centre. Last week's 60-hour Mumbai siege by 10 Islamic militants has badly hit relations between India and Pakistan, the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours who have fought three wars since independence from Britain. The attack by gunmen against multiple targets in Mumbai, including the landmark Taj Mahal hotel, killed 163 people including 26 foreigners. Nine militants were killed, while one was captured alive. New Delhi has increasingly pointed the finger at Islamabad over the violence, sometimes referred to as 'India's 9/11,' which has enraged public opinion and threatened a slow-moving peace process. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said India has been angered "as never before" by the attacks as his new home minister hinted at growing evidence of Pakistani involvement.
Opinions: I think terrorism is a very major threat around the world nowadays. As a result, I strongly think that governments worldwide should cooperate together to combat terrorism as an international effort rather than blaming one another as stated in the above news. I think that India should not have accused Pakistan of Mumbai terror links that has recently occurred. Instead, they should have attempted to resolve the entire issue by fighting terrorism together. They could have worked together in freezing the financial assets of terrorists and their supporters. They could also have combined their resources to arrest the terrorists responsible for the Mumbai attacks. In this way, terrorism can then be curbed and the threat of terrorist attacks around the world will then be significantly reduced. (311 words)

News Entries(3rd week)
1) There is a decline in the number of people who take up martial arts. In the 1970s and 1980s, there are more than six hundred students who take up martial arts but there are now less than fifty students. The computer games and over protective parents have contributed to the decline in the number of people taking martial arts. Organisers of the mixed martial arts competition hope it will create more interest, especially by bringing the various groups together. Martial arts experts in Singapore want more people to join the sport. At the same time, they want to let the public know that age does not really matter and there are those who are confident mixed martial arts will become popular in Singapore.
Opinions: Playing computer games will affect the children’s health and their eyesight will even deteriorate as they play hours after hours without taking any eye breaks. I think that parents should let their children take up martial arts as it is the knowledge of self-defense and do not have much harm. Many parents have misunderstood that martial arts are just about fighting so they do not let their children take up martial arts. Actually, there are many benefits in martial arts. It is strongly believed that one’s overall power will definitely increase since martial arts techniques teach how to use strength effectively. Taking up martial arts will also improve their flexibility significantly since entire ranges of motion from the body are exercised. Unlike many other forms of physical activity, martial arts also have a mental and spiritual element which not only improves the mind’s focus but also helps in self control. Martial arts can also help to build up one’s confidence. I think that more people should consider the benefits of martial arts. In my opinion, I think that martial arts are beneficial to both adults and children. Long hours playing computer games are not good for health, it will instead deteriorate one's health. For health benefits, I strongly encouraged those people to instead take up one of the martial arts activity. I think that it will surely benefit them tremendously. (355 words)
2) ‘One’s life fund’ which was launched on Monday aims to pay for the education of every child either affected or infected by HIV-AIDS with the need to meet the funds crisis. Children who are infected with HIV-AIDS are often either neglected or vulnerable group. AIDS patients do not get subsidies for medication. The medication bills can cost up to about one thousand dollars a month. Three simple criteria govern the fund - the youth is HIV-positive or HIV-negative, with one or both parents testing positive; the household income should not exceed S$3,000; and the applicant must be enrolled in a full-time educational programme. There are over four hundred cases of HIV-AIDS cases last year and it is expected to increase this year.
Opinions: I think that this scheme will give an opportunity in those children who are either affected or infected by HIV-AIDS to have a proper education. This scheme is extremely beneficial to those children as the fees for their education is a burden to them as they have to pay the bills for their medication. I hope that their friends will not neglect them because of their illness which will make them feel neglected and lonely with no one to talk to. They are often been discriminated by their friends which in fact I think that they are innocent. Actually, it is not their fault as they have been infected by their mother while they were in their womb. These children need a lot of care and concern as their illness are already a burden to them. Their friends should understand that HIV-AIDS cannot be transmitted through casual activities. If I were one of their friends, I would surely show more care and concern for them so that they will not feel lonely and sad. (297 words)

News Entries(2nd week)
1) A teenager committed suicide in front of his webcam as others watched it live in the Internet. He was believed to have taken a mix of three drugs while he was online with other people. It is also believed that he struggled with feelings of inadequacy and was upset with his relationship with his girlfriend and his parents' 2004 divorce that he took suicide as a last resort.
Opinions: Even if had decided to take suicide as a last resort, he would not solve any problems he had. Suicide is never a way to solve anything in life. Actually, he is not helping himself as he is running away from his problems instead of facing them bravely. If he were to have any problems he could not solve himself, he should have seek help from either his parents or teachers. He could also turn up to a counselor for help. His parents should not have neglected his feelings and could have show more care and concern for his son in this kind of situation. Care and concern for a child is strongly believed to be an important factor for a child.(190 words)
2) The prices of vegetables have been rising to ten percent to fifteen percent since last month. The reason is mainly because of the rainy season which came earlier than expected. It has affected harvests in Malaysia, where half of Singapore's vegetable imports come from. The rains have also affected chilli harvests in Thailand, Vietnam and other neighbouring countries. Chilli prices have doubled to some six dollars a kilogramme, the highest in ten years.
Opinions: The increase in the prices of vegetables will affect a lot of us. We now would have to buy vegetables for a higher price. This would be a burden to a lot of people as the government is continuously retrenching people. They would not have any income now so it is barely enough for them to afford the vegetables which are essential for our daily life. This would also affect my family as we would also have to pay a higher price. In this kind of situation, I suggest that we should spend our money carefully and wisely instead of buying those unnecessary things.(180 words)

News Entries(1st week)
1)I do not agree with what those china women think of the need to change the look of their faces as I strongly believed that everyone is different in various ways and character. I think that they should be satisfied with what they are. Their family members should also warn them about the risks about surgery and the need of their confidence in themselves so that they can change their mind before the operation until they realise that it is too late. They should also understand that capability is one of the factor to look for a job but not appearance.
2)The activity regarding the eight pets in which they have to participate in the slimming contest is interesting. This would not only promote health but also the interest in sport. Through this activity, I think that more people would take up sports as their hobbies. It is important that we exercise to maintain a fit body. Other than exercising, I think that we should also have a balanced diet, including the two servings of fruits and two servings of vegetables.

unfairness-draft 2
Unfairness-draft 2
“John, your father and I are going to Japan to visit your aunt who is ill. Here is four hundred dollars for you to spend while we were away for the whole week, my mother said while handing some money to me. I placed the wallet in my wallet and left the house for school. I was thinking about how I could spend the money when I was on the way to school. I decided to survive on bread and butter the whole week, leaving about three hundred dollars for me to buy myself some computer games.
It was such a grueling time for me during the PE lesson. I trudged back wearily back to my class after the PE lesson, I heard a loud commotion when I when into the classroom. My classmates were crowding around Tommy’s table. He was searching his bag, books and wallet frantically. Curiosity surged through me. I approached one of my friends and asked him what had happened; he told me that Tommy had lost all the money that he had brought as a donation to the welfare home which we were visiting in the afternoon. Understanding the situation, I suggested a thorough search in the classroom and inform our class teacher immediately. Taking my suggestion seriously, the class took action. Our class teacher, Mr. Johnson, rushed to the class to take control of the situation. He wanted to check everyone’s bags. We emptied our belongings from the bags and placed them on the table. Everyone stood by their table and waited for their turn patiently. When it was my turn, I showed him my things and the last item to be checked was my wallet. From there, Mr. Johnson took four hundred dollars from there and the class fell into hushed shock. Adrenaline pumped through my entire system. I stood rooted to the ground.
Mr. Johnson’s was triumphant –pleased that his efforts for flushing out the thief had borne fruit. I was really unaware that the amount lost was actually four hundred dollars. “Where did you take the money from?” he demanded for an answer. “This amount of money was given by my mother. My parents were going to Hong Kong to visit my aunt,” I explained. “Let me ask you one last time. Did you steal this sum of money from Tommy?” he bellowed. His face turned into a dark shade of red, turning to the colour of the molten lava. “I did not steal anything,” I answered truthfully. He proclaimed that I was caught red handed for stealing Tommy’s money, dismissing my story in view of the fact that my family was not well off and could not simply give me four hundred dollars which was considered a large sum of money for my family. Torrents of tears trickled down from my cheeks. It was so unfair.
My classmates were shaking their heads in disbelief. The principal was called in and conformed that I had stolen the sum of money from Tommy to the evidence they had. I knew that it was all because that I always lied to the teacher so the teacher had found out and did not believe me. Besides that, my uniform was so dirty and I was dressed unkemptly. However, to my relief, Mr. Johnson insisted that he would still carry out an investigation so that I would not be accused wrongly.
I was lonely for the whole day, even my best friend left me alone. Obviously, the stink of being a thief was more powerful than that of friendship. I was struggling to survive for the day with the loose change in my house. For the whole week, I felt lonely and hopeless. Why didn’t they believe me? After a few days later, investigations revealed that a boy had sneaked into our classroom and stole the money in Tommy’s wallet. I sighed a huge sigh of relief that I was finally cleared of all charges. “John, we had wrongly accused you of stealing. We are so sorry,” Mr. Johnson apologised. From this incident, I learnt that we should not judge a book by its cover.

Hijack-Draft 4
Hijack
“Dear ladies and gentlemen, welcome to flight SQ123. I am Captain Joe. The weather is fine and we are expecting a smooth journey to Japan. Please sit back and enjoy the facilities provided. We are taking off now,” a pleasant voice echoed over the intercom. The metallic flying plane slowly accelerated into the sky smoothly. The slight pressure created a high pitch in my eardrum I was thinking about the great fun I would have when I reached my destination. I did not have a single clue that immense danger was lurking.
“Here is a plate of Western food for you,” the air stewardess said, placing the plate onto the table. “Thank you,” I said. I gobbled down the food as though I had not eaten for days. I fell into a deep slumber after I had finished my food.
I was suddenly jolted out from my siesta by a gruff voice. “Hahaha! The plane is under my control. All of you will not reach your destination!” a loud voice crackled over the loud hailer. It was not the Captain but a cold, sinister voice that made my blood chill at the very voice of him. ”Hahaha! Al of you will be my hostages and get me to Bankok without the intervention of those pesky cops! Hahaha……” the laughter were drowned by the passenger’s yells and cries. “You had better not confront me or else……” he warned without finishing his sentence. Abruptly, a thought struck my mind –a hijack. Adrenaline pumped through my entire system. Beads of perspiration started trickling down from my forehead. A muscular man appeared out from nowhere. No one dared to utter a word.
I was well-versed in Karate and was confident that I could overpower the two men. Without second thoughts, I approached the man and delivered a well-aimed punch at his face. Blood oozed out from his lips. “How dare you young man punches me! You are going to get it from me!” he bellowed. His face turned into a dark shade of red. His jaws were clenched and hands were curled into tight fists. He glared out through bulging eyes and breathed heavily. The veins in his neck seemed ready to pop out. We glared at each other like ferocious, wild animals. Losing his patience, he gave me a punch at my stomach. “Ouch……” I shrieked in agony. Taking advantage of my temporary disabilities, he gave me another punch. With lightning reflexes, I darted to my right. I lifted up my leg and kicked at his stomach, only to miss it by inches.
The man seemed to be making some eye contacts with his accomplice. I knew that I have to be ready to attack both man. I moved my pupils sideways and I noticed that there was a lanky man approaching me –the muscular man’s accomplice. I recalled what my Karate teacher had taught me when I was in such a situation. When the lanky man behind me was about an arm’s length apart, I lifted my right knee, straightened the leg and kicked the man at his face. Almost instantly, he collapsed onto the ground.
My heart was pumping at double speed. How could I attack such a muscular man? I thought. While I was thinking about how I could use those skills I had learnt, the muscular man gave me a kick at my face before I could defend myself. “I had warned all of you not to confront me, this would what would happen. Hahaha……” the hijacker exclaimed. Why didn’t the passengers on board help me? What cowards they were! After that thought, there was a muscular man came towards the hijackers and fought with them. Within seconds, the hijacker was pinned down by the man. That was right! The pilot took over the plane and drove us back to the airport. Before I could think further, the whole place seemed to whirl around. I felt as though my last thin thread of consciousness slipping away from me as I was swept into oblivion.
I rubbed my eyes. Everything swam around me. “Where was I? Am I in heaven?” I asked myself. “Of course you are not. You are in the hospital. An air stewardess in the plane hid behind a chair and called the police so everyone was rescued and the hijackers were apprehended. Are you feeling all right now?” my mother told me. Concerns and worries were all written on her face. “I am fine,” I replied.

The whole place seemed to whirl around.

I peeped out of the window. The weather changed rapidly, completely untold by the forecast. The blazing sun was radiating in the sky as its golden rays jutted in and out with the wind blowing the clouds rhythmically. Suddenly, inky black clouds started to triumphant the sky. Dist ant jabs of orange sparks strike the sky continuously, changing the colour of the sky fro blue, grey black and slight orange. It was just like fireworks bursting in the clouds. Then, a blanket of heavy rain pelted relentlessly on the plane like machine guns.
“We have to take a detour through a mountain pass. We apologise for the inconvenience we has caused,” Captain Joe said. The mountains were closely packed, making it complicated to pass through. The novice pilots were well trained in what books they had taught them to but had no experience passing through such mountains. Abruptly, a mountain appeared too close. Despite the best they had tried to swerve it, it took out a wing. Horrible screeching of twisted metals reached my ears. Sparks were flying from its torn wing, the plane hurtled towards the ground at high velocity. Some passengers were flung off from their seats. “I think the plane is going to explode” I muttered under my breath. Adrenaline was pumped through my entire system. Beads of perspiration started trickling down from my forehead.
There was no doubt that the plane was going to explode. The massive explosion rocked the air plane. The whole iron monsters had broken into halves, both being devoured by fiery flames. Mushroom shaped clouds of pewter grey smoke curled up into the air, vanishing into wisps of smoke. The acrid smoke was choking everyone upon every breath they inhaled. The inferno advanced inch by inch, devouring everything into its path. I was trying to crouch low, trying to get oxygen into my deprived lungs. I concentrated on one thing –escaping out from the plane. I could feel the intense heat while escaping from the plane.
“Where is the exit?” I inquired, squinting in the smoke. The exit was near yet seemed far. My les felt like lead but I forced them to carry me forward. “Few more steps,” I encouraged myself to carry on. “Finally!” I exclaimed. I reached the exit and got out from there safely. “Help me……” someone mumbled. I scanned around to find a man struggling to get out. I went towards him and held his hands before pulling him out of the plane to a safe area. When I was taking a breather, a loud bomb sounded loudly. I wheeled around to realize that the plane has exploded. Tongues of flames were engulfing the plane.
“Our chances of being rescued were frail, we might die here,” the man told me. “We have to think of a solution,” I whispered to the man. I rummaged through my pockets only to find a box of matchsticks. I remembered that I had stolen this box of matchsticks from my mother’s cupboard. Suddenly, an idea struck my mind. “Smoke signals!” I exclaimed. I went to gather some twigs and struck a matchstick against the box. I lit the twigs and smoke rise up.
Suddenly, a helicopter whizzed past us. “A helicopter! We are being rescued!” I exclaimed. My expression altered from loneliness to happiness as my eyes flickered with a gleam of hope. “You are right, we are being rescued!” the man exclaimed. The man whooped with joy, screaming, “We are being rescued! Rescue!” The helicopter slowly landed on the ground and we went into it.
We were taken back to the airport. “Are you all right? Are you hurt?” my mother asked. Concerns and worries were all written on her face. “I am fine and not hurt at all,” I said with a grin. “What about the scratch on your leg,” my brother inquired. “That is just a small injury. Need not worry about that,” I said assuring.

unfairness
Unfairness
“John, your father and I are going to Hong Kong to visit your aunt who is ill. Here is four hundred dollars for you to spend while we were away for the whole week, my mother said while handing some money to me. I placed the money in my wallet and left the house for school.
Our class teacher, Miss Tan, rushed to the class to take control of the situation. She wanted to check everyone’s bags. We emptied our belongings from the bags and placed them on the table. Everyone stood by their table and waited for their turn patiently. When it was my turn, I showed her my things and the last item to be checked was my wallet. From there, Miss Tan took four hundred dollars from there and the class fell into hushed shock. Adrenaline pumped through my entire system. I stood rooted to the ground.
Miss Tan’s was triumphant –pleased that her efforts for flushing out the thief had borne fruit. I was really unaware that the amount lost was actually four hundred dollars. “Where did you take the money from?” she demanded for an answer. “This amount of money was given by my mother. My parents were going to Hong Kong to visit my aunt,” I explained. “Let me ask you one last time. Did you steal this sum of money from Tommy?” she bellowed. Her face turned into a dark shade of red, turning to the colour of the molten lava. “I did not steal anything,” I answered truthfully. She proclaimed that I was caught red handed for stealing Tommy’s money, dismissing my story in view of the fact that my family was not well off and could not simply give me four hundred dollars which was considered a large sum of money for my family. Torrents of tears trickled down from my cheeks. It was so unfair.
My classmates were shaking their heads in disbelief. The principal was called in and conformed that I had stolen the sum of money from Tommy to the evidence they had. Even a phone call to my parents was considered too much trouble for the school. Instead of thinking about the matter, they concentrated on consoling Tommy. I knew that my average background was the main reason why the truth weighs less than the distress of Tommy.
I was lonely for the whole day, even my best friend left me alone. Obviously, the stink of being a thief was more powerful than that of friendship. I was struggling to survive for the day with the loose change in my house. At night, I called my parents to tell them about the incident in school. “All my classmates accused ma of stealing Tommy’s money. They left me alone. The teacher confiscated the money you gave me and I have to use the loose change in the house. It is so unfair……” I sobbed. “Don’t cry, we will complain to the school. We will come back immediately,” my mother comforted.
The following day, my parents came back and went to school. However, the principal insisted that I did not put across the situation clearly. Feeling furious, they wrote a long complaint to the school. The matter was solved when Miss Tan and the principal was criticized for mishandling the matter. Finally, I was cleared of all charges.
From this incident, I learnt that wealth spoke louder than truth.

Hijack

Abruptly, a thought struck my mind –a hijack. Adrenaline pumped through my entire system. Beads of perspiration started trickling down from my forehead. A muscular man appeared out from nowhere. No one dared to utter a word.
Without second thoughts, I approached the man and delivered a well-aimed punch at his face. Blood oozed out from his lips. “How dare you young man punches me! plane crash
Plane Crash
“Dear ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts. I am Captain Joe. The weather is fine and we are expecting a smooth journey to Japan. Please sit back and enjoy the facilities provided. We are taking off now,” the Captain announced. The metallic flying plane slowly accelerated into the sky smoothly. The slight pressure created a high pitch in my eardrum. “I will surely have a lot of fun when I reached there,” I giggled. I was oblivious to the danger lurking.
I reached the exit.
“We have to think of a solution,” I whispered to the other survivors.
Hours past but there was still not a single sign of being rescued. “A helicopter! We are being rescued!” I exclaimed. My expression altered from loneliness to happiness as my eyes flickered with a gleam of hope. We were finally rescued.

Need not worry about that,” I said assuring.
Pickpocket
Pickpocket
A garlicky stench of sweat filled the platform as I pinched my nose, trying to prevent the stench from entering my nose. Shafts of bronze light shone as commuters, workers and students mingled around. Finally, the crackles and the squeaks of brakes of the metal wheel screeched to a halt. I elbowed my way through the crowd of passengers.
With much effort, I managed to board the sardine packed and stuffy vehicle. Soon, the bus door shut close and moves on. I could hardly move an inch. My eyes rested on a girl, searching her pockets frantically with an air of despair. Soon, tears trickled down her rosy cheeks.
“Why did she cry so suddenly? Has anything happened to her?” I muttered under my breath. I approached her and asked her what had happened. “My……my wallet……is lost,” she sobbed.
“Had you dropped it anywhere?” I inquired. “I don’t know,” she answered. I scanned around the bus and my gaze fell on a man –he was fidgeting continuously, waiting impatiently at the door of the bus. “Could he have taken the girl’s wallet,” I wondered.
I mustered up my courage and approached him. “Sir, had you taken anything?” I asked. “It’s none of your business!” he shouted. All eyes were on us, interested in the commotion. “How do you explain this?” I said, pointing at the wallet in his hands. “This is mine!” he bellowed.
Losing his patience, he delivered a well-aimed punch at me. “Ouch……” I doubled up in pain. Taking advantage of my temporary disadvantage, he rained blows after blows at me. I could not take them so I collapsed onto the floor.
Suddenly, the door flung open, the man took to his heels. “Chase him……He is a……a pickpocket,” I uttered, grimacing in pain. Almost instantly, dozens of people jumped out from their seats and ran at breakneck speed. “Stopp…” one of them shouted. Their legs felt like lead and their chest heaved. Their lungs felt like burning as though pleading with them to stop but all of them were all unrelenting. Arms outstretched, they tried to catch hold of the pickpocket. However, he seemed so near and yet was frustrating out of reach each time they edged closer. The pickpocket in the chase with the rest was panting hard as well.
Suddenly, a stone was flung from nowhere. It ricocheted off the man’s back and fell with a heavy thud. A few muscular men rushed forward and pinned him down while another whipped out his hand phone and dialed in triple nines.
Within minutes, sirens of police cars rent the silent afternoon. The wallet was returned to the girl and the man was arrested. “Thank you so much. Thank you, “the girl thanked me profusely. She reached out for her wallet and took a fifty dollars note from there. What a rich girl she was to have so many fifty dollars notes in her wallet. However, I declined the reward politely. “Please, take it. You are such a brave boy to have confronted the man,” she said. I still did not accept it.
“All right then, I will tell my father to buy you a box of chocolates. Would that be all right?” she asked. I nodded with a grin.

compo-plane crash
Red demons licked the plane, surrounding the people in it, as though celebrating the victory of a successful capture of their preys.
I reached the exit.
Hours past but there was still not a single sign of being rescued. Then, a helicopter hovered above the survivors and me. My expression altered from loneliness to happiness as my eyes flickered with a gleam of hope. We were finally rescued.
We were taken back to the airport. “Are you all right? Are you hurt?” my mother asked. Concerns and worries were all written on her face. “I am fine and not hurt at all,” I said with a grin. “What about the scratch on your leg,” my brother inquired. “That is just a small injury.
