1) A teenager committed suicide in front of his webcam as others watched it live in the Internet. He was believed to have taken a mix of three drugs while he was online with other people. It is also believed that he struggled with feelings of inadequacy and was upset with his relationship with his girlfriend and his parents' 2004 divorce that he took suicide as a last resort.
Opinions: Even if had decided to take suicide as a last resort, he would not solve any problems he had. Suicide is never a way to solve anything in life. Actually, he is not helping himself as he is running away from his problems instead of facing them bravely. If he were to have any problems he could not solve himself, he should have seek help from either his parents or teachers. He could also turn up to a counselor for help. His parents should not have neglected his feelings and could have show more care and concern for his son in this kind of situation. Care and concern for a child is strongly believed to be an important factor for a child.(190 words)
2) The prices of vegetables have been rising to ten percent to fifteen percent since last month. The reason is mainly because of the rainy season which came earlier than expected. It has affected harvests in Malaysia, where half of Singapore's vegetable imports come from. The rains have also affected chilli harvests in Thailand, Vietnam and other neighbouring countries. Chilli prices have doubled to some six dollars a kilogramme, the highest in ten years.
Opinions: The increase in the prices of vegetables will affect a lot of us. We now would have to buy vegetables for a higher price. This would be a burden to a lot of people as the government is continuously retrenching people. They would not have any income now so it is barely enough for them to afford the vegetables which are essential for our daily life. This would also affect my family as we would also have to pay a higher price. In this kind of situation, I suggest that we should spend our money carefully and wisely instead of buying those unnecessary things.(180 words)

Dear Aurora,
Well done. This week's opinions are well written.
1) Agree that a little care and concern would have certain helped this teenager. If you were his friend, what could you have done? You can also comment on the effects of drugs on him in your opinions too.
2) generally well written. Btw, do you mean that many Singaporeans were retrenched recently or do you mean that most of the retrenched Singaporeans were Civil Servants? Please clarify. What can this price hike do to the poorer families?
Replying to ms tan.
1)If I were to be this teenager's friend, I would have shown more care and concern for him. I would also encourage him to kick his habit of consuming drugs as drugs are known to be highly addictive and can damage our internal organs. Besides damaging our internal organs, drugs would not solve any problems in reality. He is just running away from all his problems. I would also try to convince him to turn himself into the centre which will help himself to stop consuming drugs.
2)The poorer families would not be able to afford the vegetables as it is already barely enough for them to pay their utilities bills. As a result of not consuming vegetables, they would not have enough nutitions and vitamins to fight deseases. In order to help those poor families, I would try to donate some food to them so as to lighten their burden.
Dear Aurora,
Well done!
2)In 'The poorer families would not be able to afford the vegetables as it is already barely enough for them to pay their utilities bills', does the 'it' means their salary? If so then the sentence should be rewritten. Try rewriting it. When you use pronouns, they refer to a noun. Thus the noun (i.e. the salary in your case) should be mentioned first in your sentence.
1) I agree with you that commit suicide will not solve and i also think that the teenager's parents or friends should show more care and concern to him.
2) I agree with you that the poor income will not have barely enough money to afford the vegetables which are essential for our daily life.
Dear all,
Maybe the way to get around the financial crisis is really to tighten our belts and spend only on the necessities. :-) To quote from a book called 'Rich dad poor dad', 'Only the rich have assets, the middle income buys liabilities and the poor only have expenses'. One way to get out of poverty is to spend wisely, purchase assets that can earn income instead of liabilities like 'cars' which can't really earn any income. What do you think?
